Toronto Asian Food Expo
Top chefs to showcase culinary creativity at the Toronto Asian Food Expo:
Trend-setting chefs from top independent and chain restaurants, as well as catering companies, resorts and foodservice contractors, have demonstrated their skills in the Chefs Stage showcase at the Toronto Asian Food Expo, held September 16-18, 2005, at the National Trade Centre in Toronto. Challenged to craft innovative, flavourful creations, these chefs have highlighted the celebrated traditional and the latest trends in Asian cuisine; providing inspiration for others as they created their dishes on two display kitchens.
 "Innovation and culinary creativity plays a pivotal role in the restaurant industry. Toronto top chefs are freely stepping up to the plate; looking forward to the opportunity of creating new dishes, or adding a new twist to existing recipes to satisfy Canada’s palate for Asian cuisine," said Executive Producer, Alex Yeung. "The Chefs Stage at the Asian Food Expo is the perfect place to showcase this creativity and give visitors a taste of what's current on restaurant menus. We have brought together a group of over thirty talented and inspiring chefs from several industry segments to share a mix of the traditional, the hot, and the new trend-setting menu items highlighting the flavors of Asia."
A few of the participating chef/restaurants in the 2005 Chefs Stages are mentioned below, their current place of activity is linked where possible. If you're in the Torontot area, do go and visit, it's certainly worth it!
- Evelyn Chau, Experienced cooking instructor and author of one of the top dim sum books, "Have Some Dim Sum".
- Hai Hua, Spring Rolls - A unique pan-Asian restaurant with an extensive and creative menu spanning Thai to Vietnamese to Chinese cuisine with a contemporary flair.
- Tom Thai, Tempo - One of Toronto's top fine-dining restaurants featuring inventive Japanese fusion fare.
- Tony Wu, Award-Winning Chef - The first Canadian chef having been awarded with gold, silver, and bronze medals from the World Chinese Competition
- Winlai Wong, Monsoon - A leader in redesigning a variety of eastern cuisines with studied precision for the North American palate.
- Arvinda Chauna, Healthy Gourmet Indian Cooking - Specialists in authentic, regional vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian and Thai cooking classes, emphasizing healthy, wholesome, and nutritious preparation using fragrant spices and fresh herbs.
- Bebu Saha, Biryani House - With specialties from the diverse regions of India, each dish delivers flavors of remarkable complexity.
Also included were two themed pavilions: the Asian Street Food Marquee and Spirits of Asia to the Asian Food Expo. The marquee was frequented well and was an exciting space, which brought the Far East to Canadians by featuring authentic delicacies as enjoyed by the region's locals in their different street markets. Spirits of Asia was a showcase of Asian beers, sakes, and liqueurs. Visitors were really enjoying the company of friends and being entertained with live cocktail demonstrations by some of Tornto's best bartenders, while being educated about the vast range of Asian spirits available on the market.
The event was organized by Yeung and Associates, specialists in producing trade events in ethnic and specialty markets. Past events include Toronto Celebrates: Lunar New Year Festival, the largest North American Celebration of its kind; the Chinese International Food Expo; The Toronto Chinese Home and Hobby Show; and the Mississauga Chinese Arts Festival.
